I doubt much has changed in the markup for these vehicles in the last 10 yrs, then tack manufacturer cash on top of it in today's anti-SUV fuel and social climate, and a dealer could be looking at close to 20k of "wiggleroom" on some of those sub 40k & 50k vehicles. Easy to make people think they are getting lots of money for their trade and get them all giddy to buy. Seen it done numerous times 1st-hand. I exaggerate a bit in his case, but he definitely will not be actually getting much more than 5k for a 15-20 yr old Z car. He should keep the Z, offer the dealer whatever price the dealer wanted for the new vehicle with his Z in trade (for "12k") and sutbract 5-6 k from that sale price. The dealer is looking at the same amount of profit and doesnt get the Z.
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism", they will adopt every principle of our socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without ever knowing how it happened.... I no longer need to run on the Socialist Party ticket because the Democrat Party has now adopted our platform." --Norman Thomas, 1944 Socialist Party Presidential Candidate "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." --Winston Churchill END THE FED ....learn why, in 42 minutes
